Bowmore’s Oldest Whisky Sells for a Record $761,400 at Charity Auction
Distillers One of One Charity Auction
Bowmore’s oldest whisky has been sold for a record-breaking price of $761,400 (£562,500) at the Distillers One of One charity auction. The auction took place at Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh, in partnership with Sotheby’s.
Details of the Bowmore STAC Whisky
This exceptional whisky was distilled in 1962 and has an alcohol content of 41%. It was stored in second-fill American oak hogsheads within the distillery’s No.1 Vaults. The whisky was presented in an unusual vessel inspired by its island surroundings, designed to replicate a rock face.
Tasting notes include soft orchard fruits and clover honey, with fresh pineapple, subtle honeydew melon, and pecan nuts. Floral notes of honeysuckle with menthol and vanilla are also present, along with ocean minerality on the lips.
Bottle Design
Richard Woodard, a writer for db, described the Bowmore bottle as an “irresistibly tactile, slab-like bottle.” The design is the result of numerous abandoned attempts to achieve the perfect look and is designed to recall the sea stacks of Bowmore’s Islay home.
Benefits for the Youth Action Foundation
Proceeds from the Distillers One of One auction will benefit the Youth Action Foundation, created by the Distillers’ Charity to support disadvantaged young adults in Scotland. The foundation works with charity partners who offer education and vocational training programs, including distillation training.
Final Words from the Organizers
Robbie Millar, Managing Director of the Scotch & Irish brand house at Beam Suntory, said that the sale of the oldest-ever Bowmore whisky is a landmark in the story of this incredible distillery.
Jonny Fowle, Vice President and Global Head of Whisky at Sotheby’s, added that Bowmore STAC precisely defines what Distillers One of One is all about, describing it as a pivotal moment in Scotch Whisky production, design, and philanthropy.
